what are the symptoms of dyslexia

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Do the only symptoms of dyslexia deal with not reading at an appropriate level for a childs age? My son reads at his grade level, even above it a little. However he has a hard time writing his letters the correct way and often writes numbers backwords and when you ask him whats wrong with it he doesnt always see that he wrote them backwards. He is currently in the 3rd grade and has had this problem since Kindergarden. I was always told and thought that hed grow out of it and that it was common in children his age but know he is approaching 4th grade and I am concerned. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

There are different types of dyslexia so testing might be a good idea, especially if he is still having trouble with letter/number reversals at this age. The fact that he can read at grade level is not suprising if he has learned some good coping skills.

My son with dyslexia was reading at a college level in 6th grade. :)

I hope your school is testing your child. We didn’t realize my son had dyslexia until the 4th grade. I was told that dyslexia is very much like a child learning a foreign language. In my son’s case phonics really have no meaning, and do not help him decode words. His spelling and handwriting are terrible, although he is now in high school. His reading is also very slow. He is an honors student, but relies mostly on verbal information rather than written. Make sure your school is paying attention to helping you!
