I need help!!!!I have an 11years old daughter. she was daignose with LD at the age of 5years old. She was in the NYC school system up to 10years old. We just moved to New Jersey and she had to get a new evaluation for the NJ school system. She was just classific with Cognitively Impaired -MILD. What does that mean. Is that more then LD. She is still getting all her special ED services. What does it mean for her in the future. PLease help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cognitively impaired means her IQ is below average. You can find an IQ chart on the internet and see where she falls. It’s different then an LD, because some kids with LD’s have average IQ’s or even high IQ’s. Since you said it’s mild, it probably just means she’ll have to work a little harder in school.

Mild cognitive impairment is a term otherwise used for mild mental retardation. It would suggest a child falls on the IQ scale two or more standard deviations from the mean of 100. Hence, a child with mild mental retadation or mild cognitive impairment would likely have an IQ that would fall somewhere between 55-70. Educationally, it would likely require direct special education services and with a focus on life skills interventions.

I think your talking about the psycho-educational evaluation. It shows memory scores.
My son has low memory scores and low language scores. It means he will be on level 1 reading materials for a period of 1-2 years.
We also follow up with a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician. She stated many learning disabilties have low memory scores. We ruled out epilepsy.
We are starting cod liver oil in addition to vitamin B compound.
Follow up with a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician or a Pediatric Neurologist who can read and interpret the reports and make sure she is getting the right amount of services in school.
