Where do I start?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,
My son has been tested several times in the past few months. So far he has been found to have expressive/receptive language disorder. He also has a verbal processing disorder, visual/motor difficulties, auditory memory problems, visual memory problems, spatial alignment problems and phonics issues. All that said, he is sweet, happy, easy going, fun, has friends and is very gifted musically. He is 9 and will repeat 3rd grade this year. I want to start on a new phonics program with him but given all the above issues I don’t know what type to use. He often learns the rules but does not apply them. Any ideas are appreciated.

Jan,

There are some great articles under LD In Depth under the reading category. Some of the better programs will be listed there. I have found that the best programs are not heavily rules-based for the very reason you mention. A good start would be the Reading Reflex book by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness. A reading clinic director and occasional paticipant of this forum has written a very nice workbook to go along with the advanced code part, and I can give you his email if you send me a private message. His workbook is significantly better than the one the book authors sell.

I also think Lindamood-bell programs are excellent, but they really require training and are much more complex to deliver.
