Hi,
My soon to be 9th grader has always had word retrieval problems…those words just disappear when he needs them. As his
skills in other areas improve and as he gets older, we now feel we should get our district on the stick to help him gain skill in this area.
So, does anyone know what professional area this would fall under? The words are there but just not when he needs them.

Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
Hi Beverly,
He has trouble finding the right word to express himself, or remember someone’s name although he could tell you at another time when it finally comes to him.
How often?….hm…he stumbles on words really fairly often… most times whenever he is trying to explain something.

Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
It could fall under several but my first choice would be a good speech/language pathologist.
Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
Thanks, Sara, I will talk with our local district SLP.

Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
Hi Donna,
While a good SLP can help your son with his word retrieval problems, I would suggest looking into Audiblox. There is a language component with their program. Does it work? I would give it a thumbs up. My 11 year old daughter has come A LONG way with her language issues since we started Audiblox. She is more willing to talk to people now and seems more confident about what she wants to say. She still has problems, but this program really helps children like my daughter and your son.
Good Luck!
Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
Definitely if it is going on often, I would say speech/language. I was hoping maybe we had the same problem to look for a solution to. Good Luck.
SLP
Donna,
My soon to be 9th grade daughter has this same problem (among others). She will be receiving language therapy from the SLP 2hrs each week during the next school year.
Both FFW and PACE have greatly improved my dd’s language skills though she still has problems that need further remediation.
Blessings, momo
Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
According to one SLP I once worked with, this cannot be FIXED, per se.
Re: Who addresses word retrieval problems?
Hi Anitya,
I always wondered just how ANYONE could go about remediating or
helping with this problem. It really didn’t make sense to me
that it is something that could be remediated…something that
you just lived with.
I will, nonetheless, run it by our district SLP and ask her just how she would go about this and see if it makes any sense.
Thanks Anitya.

Re: SLP
Hi,
My daughter (son’s twin) also went through FF and it did her a world of good in her processing issues but son’s issues are different and cannot be addressed by FF. Daughter did program at
home so I am familiar with the program and loved watching daughter’s progress and dealt with her trials and tribulations.
What is pace supposed to do and how much does it cost and how many sessions per week and how long are the sessions?

Sorry this is not an answer but a related question-does this happen where a word is used and he does not know the meaning though he has heard and used it many times, or is it that he just can’t find the right word to express himself?? If it is the first, I have an ongoing post regarding that myself; if it is the latter, how often??
