writing skills

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

A few weeks ago someone posted information about a program to teach writing skills. I have searched and searched and can’t find the reference. Could we try again? I’m looking for writing, not handwriting. Thanks much for any suggestions you might have.

Connie, Please see my posts 9/26 on Parenting LD board and 10/05 on Teaching LD board. (If you search my name on that board you will find other posts on this topic.) These are all about the IEW program. Shay has had success using Sopris West’s Step Up to Writing—she uses it for her high school kids. I don’t know about its applicability to younger children; IEW principles can be applied as early as first or second grade on through high school.

Step Up to Writing is a non-graded program. You just teach parts of the program that are age appropriate for your grade or age that you are teaching. This program brought my 11th graders from being ‘elementary’ school writers to being able to write research papers. This program has a lot of parts to it, at the least, you would want the manual and the Handy Pages. The Handy Pages are great and necessary for instruction. If you want more information on the program, email me directly.
