My 11 year old son’s LD teacher recently met with me and suggested that we consider placing our son in a 5 week, intensive language and reading summer camp. She said that, due to the fact he fell into one of the three criterias for inclusion (“students scoring low in reading and receptive language”), that he would be a perfect nominee for the program. Only 36 kids will be selected, and they fall into either his category, or two other categories (“students scoring low in reading, receptive language and appropriate behaviors” or “students scoring in the strong average or above in reading and social skills.”) The program sounds intriguing, but includes some things that make us a little hesitant. Children will be given three EEGs, and actually paid $40 for taking the procedures. The program is not only free, parents will be given $20 for transporting them to each of the three EEG screenings and completing a lengthy questionaire. My wife and I discussed the subject with our son and he surprised us by being enthusiastic about going. He even thought having “stuff attached to your brain” was “cool.” Anyway, I realize this may be a local program (I’m based in Northern Va.), but I was hoping maybe some of you out there have sent your children to similar camps. The program is entitled “Youth of Promise Brain Camp for Adolescent Learners: A Language and Reading Research Project.” I would be very grateful for any help offered.
Re: Youth Of Promise (Learning Research Camp)- I Need Any In
Yes, it is. Thanks for the thumbs up; I think we are going to register our son in the program.
Is this the program offered at George Mason under the direction of Dr. Barbara Given? If so, I can highly support Dr. Given in any endeavor. She is a dynamite lady and does LOADS of research and follow up programs for special needs students.
Good luck.
