College Algebra Problems

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is a sophmore in college still struggling with algebra. Are there any web pages that provide college algebra assistance, etc.

Thanks

Thanks to scifinut - that does look like a good site. I forwarded the information to him.

Caution with such sites. I have seen several that teach things that are point-blank wrong — one where one of their *model* problems is a misreading.
It would be far better for him to look for a *qualified* tutor. Most colleges have tutoring services, and he just has to search out someone who is actually good at math — a problem with some peer tutoring is that they figure if you passed math 101 then you can teach it, which allows for sharing of ignorance and dead ends, so look for a tutor who is either a teacher or a senior math student.

Do check on the resources the college has. SOmetimes they have faculty tutors, even (or people like me :-)), or online options they’ve researched, or peer tutoring (here, peer tutors have pretty high standards and pretty good training, though it’s not a good match for everybody… or they wouldn’t have hired me ;-))
We also have “facilitated study groups” that are ‘facilitated’ by faculty and beau coup office hours for faculty.

*Major* advantage - they will know exaclty what demands **his courses** have.

Hi. Kean University ( http://www.kean.edu ) has used these texts for College Algebra:
BEGINNING ALGEBRA by Margaret LIAL and John HORNSBY (8th Edition); pub: Addison Wesley Longman. (c) 2000. There was *some* web-supplement. .

INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA by D. Franklin WRIGHT, and Bill NEW (4th Edition); ( with CD-ROM ) pub: Adventure Learning Systems/HAWKES publishing.

SOS Math web-site is one resource. Many peer-tutors don’t understand
LD.

Good luck.
