Colleges and ADD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Anyone have a child/young adult that is making it in college? College with good tutoring supports? I know about the K&W book, just looking for personal experience. I am particularly interested in east coast, but open to other schools. Just want to make every attempt to give the best opportunity for my son to end up with a degree. He is very bright and very disorganized.

I have a friend… with a child at Northeastern. Her son needed a special school to get through school but now is doing well at Northeastern. I have another whose ADHD son who rather struggled through school but got luck and got into a school called Muhlenberg is doing well there. Neither of those are schools in K&W, I believe, though.

Another friend sent their son to Green Mountain which is in K&W and had a good experience with it.

Sara,
Thanks. I am familiar with Northeastern and Muhlenberg, but not Green Mountain. Do you know what services if any they are utilizing to be successful? For example, are they receiving outside tutoring? Are they in any particular college within these universities? Do they get guidance as to which classes to take, and with whom to take them?
If you know I would appreciate any information you can offer.
Thanks.

Green Mountain is in the K&W Guide. The entire college is directed toward helping the student with learning differences.

Neither of the students at the other schools is in a particular program or receiving outside tutoring. The one at Northeastern does avail himself of the learning support center which helps him to write his papers, I believe. Bpth these students have advisors but I don’t know whether the advisors are aware that they have learning differences.

Remember that the ADA works to protect any student identified with learning differences at any college.

I am an educational consultant who specializes in placements for students with disablities. I would be happy to answer some questions for you regarding colleges. I would need to know what size school he wants, city, suburban campus etc. Have you looked at Curry College in Milton MA? University of Vermont? Two schools with good support but very different. Please feel free to e-mail me if you want more information. Jill

Jill, Do you know of any other state besides Massachuesetts that has legislation in place that waives College Boards for LD/dyslexic students? I am trying to pursue similar legislation in CA. And do you have information on CA colleges with great programs. My son is Dyslexic, 4.3 gpa., has 504, receives accomodations.

Have you considered Syracuse University? My daughter is severely dysgraphic and mildly ADHD. She gets appropriate support from every professor and instructor and is doing very well.
