Hello. My name is Rhonda and I’m a freshman soon to be a sophomore in college. I was diagnosed with AD/HD when I was 5, but havent been on ritalin in years. I’m wondering if that has anythign to do with it? Also, for as long as I can remember, I’ve ALWAYS had trouble with my memory. I study for hours and it’s harder than heck trying to remember what I read. I got bad grades my first semester and now coming up to the end of the second, I fear the same result. I got to a learning center we have but it still doesn’t help. My father thinks that I’m being lazy, but that’s not the case, I get discouarged and not want to go because I feel like I’m a failure at every subject I attempt. I was wondering if I have a learning disability? Also, I heard that hearing can play a part in learning disabilities, is that true? Because if it is, my partial hearing my be to blame too. ANY input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If the college instructors can only recommend flash cards, they don’t know much about effective teaching and learning. It also says something about the kind of testing they are doing — flash cards are most effective for trivia memorize-and-wipe. It would be worth talking to some higher-ups in the college administration and suggesting that they address this issue; most colleges have some sort of programs that are supposed to improve teaching, and a few practical facts wouldn’t hurt.
Hi, my dd is a freshman in college and suffers from ADD/LD. She to has memory problems and is finding it hard to do well in her studies. It seems the standard answer from teachers is to use flash cards. She studies for hours and cannot retain the information.
