My son is severely LD and is not ready for a college program at this time. I’m not certain that he will ever be. We are looking at 2 possible programs for him—Maplebrook’s CAPS program and the Old Forge Program—both in New York. Does anyone know of similar programs (that include a life-skills emphasis and additional academic remediation) that are in the South, mid-west, or West? Thanks.
A few days ago I posted a list of programs (that included Maplebrook CAPS) that are similar in concept. See my response below to Jill’s posting called “transitional programs.” This is a list that would be appropriate for a student who is considered low normal cognitive function (generally scoring 70-90 on WISC/WAIS type tests) combined with significant learning disabilities that preclude coping with the academic demands of a standard college program. They are designed to help develop adult independent living skills, a vocational plan, further development of academic skills and social skills. Some of them include an option of attendance at the local community college with support from the program. I did not include the Lynn Old Forge program in my list because this advertises itself as a two-year college for LD students and assumes that college academics is a realistic goal at the time of enrollment. If that is true for your student then there are other colleges to look at too. On the other hand, for students functioning in the less than 70 IQ range, there is an entirely different list of programs to consider. Best wishes.
