We live in the northeast. We have son with ADD who is going to go to college. What we are looking for is college or university with small classes, where there is tutoring for most of his classes, so he knows if he is on task, and can suggest what he needs to study-unsure that professional tutor is necessary over peer tutors and learning centers. Can someone tell me if there is a profound difference to the ADD student? He would need copies of class notes and organziational help since he is disorganized and dysgraphic. He needs help budgeting time. Any suggestions? We are willing to send him far away from home if necessary. He is interested in informational computer systems and perhaps business, but at this point we realize he could change his mind many times. He would like to escape foreign language requirements, but is willing to take a foreign language if he has to. We are not sure that he could succeed with a foreign language in college, as h.s . has been a struggle. We want a school where he is definitely not a number, and where he will get the help he requires should he start to slip.
Re: University or College for Student with ADD
I am currently applying to Landmark College, in Southeastern Vermont located in a town called Putney. Landmark is specifically designated for students with learning disabilities such as ADHD, Dyslexia and others. The courses and services they provide are invaluable, as it is the only accredited 2 year degree offering college in the US. At the minimum - you should look into it at the web site. http://www.landmarkcollege.org
Re: University or College for Student with ADD
Thank you. I heard about Landmark, but never went to the website until you suggested the idea. I am looking for a four year school that will provide small classes, and some safety nets (so the college may realize that tutoring is indicated) before he fails.
Good luck at Landmark.
Re: University or College for Student with ADD
I agree with the suggestion to buy a book which lists colleges for students with disabilities. We purchased Peterson’s and found it to be very helpful. Good luck. We live in PA and I can tell you there is a business college named King’s in Wilkes-barre which has comphrehensive program for students with LD.
Good luck.
Re: University or College for Student with ADD
Check out Curry College in Milton Ma. They have the PAL program for LD/ADHD students. There is also an excellent summer program for juniors and seniors in high school.
I always suggest getting hold of a copy of The K&W Guide to College for Students With Learning Disabilities. You could order it off amazon.com or find it at a public library. It lists those colleges which target specifically at students with learning differences such as Green Mountain and Landmark but also lists some other colleges that are noted for their willingness to work with the ld students in their midst.
Good luck.
