Any FastForWord concensus?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’ve heard from several sources that even for kids with auditory processing problems it is more beneficial to go to a multisensory program like LMB rather than go through FF first. Any feelings about this?

A child who has auditory processing problems not related to the sounds of speech — a child whose only auditory processing problem involves left-right brain communication, for example — would not benefit from FFW. In these particular cases, even though the child has been diagnosed with auditory processing disorder, it would make sense to skip FFW and move immediately into a multi-sensory instructional program.

However, if the child has difficulty understanding conversation in a group setting, difficulty discriminating pitch, difficulty following multi-step verbal directions, slowness understanding conversation over the telephone, etc. then I would not skip FFW. LMB is good, but it does not duplicate the training provided by FFW. FFW is more foundational, while LMB is more instructional.
