Anyone use DIBELS?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was wondering if anyone on here is using DIBELS from www.dibles.uoregon.edu (I think that is it) I am facsinated by this website. If so, what reading program do you use with this?. I also just saw in the Sorpris West it being offered there this month.

I would love to know if Dibels is being used in conjunction with Phonographix anywhere?

Dibels is an assessment tool. I know many primary teachers use it. I have downloaded it but I haven’t used it yet. I think it could be used with any reading program.

All of the K & 1 teachers use it at our school (and several in our district) as an assessment at the begining, middle and end of the year… Our district had an inservice a few years back with the U of O folks— it has been very useful!

Jennifer,
Would you say that this has helped reduce special ed referrals and or raised test scores? I like the dibels concept and would like to know what you think as I want to approach my principal on starting Dibels.
Thanks.

I’m not sure of the exact effect on test scores and referrals, and I don’t know if DIBELS itself would have a direct impact. It is not a program for teaching the skills, but just to assess where a student is performing based on certain benchmarks that need to be met each year. I do know that it identifies areas of weakness in their reading skills, which allows the teacher to intervene in these areas. It also makes a nice progress indicator to show parents during conferences, etc.
