Apraxia

Hi,

I am a mother with a child who has been diagnosed with apraxia. He has been going to speach and occupational therapy for more than two years. I am wondering how public school systems deal with children such as mine. Do teachers have special training in dealing with children with apraxia? If there is no special training for inclusion with this type of disability, what is the typical long term outcome for a student with apraxia in the public school system?

My question arises because I am finding it difficult to get “special” help for my child. The school system my son is currently in has suggested that they must wait until the “disability” demonstrates that it interferes with his ability to learn. While I understand this (sort of), I know my son is behind because he has a twin that does not have apraxia. The son that does have apraxia is definiatly behind the son without apraxia.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My son has this. His is rather mild. It only affects him in certain areas mostly related to bilateral motor issues and some fine motor issues. I have been remediating him at home with a wide variety of things for about 4 years. He is 8. I don’t think the school does much in the way of remediating any deficits, not just this one.
If you give the wonderful people of this board a more detailed explanation of how this deficit affects his abilities, they can give you some excellent advice on programs and techniques that work.
My son is currently undergoing Interactive Metronome outside of school and has made great strides.

Hi, My son has been diagnosed with Dyspraxia, is this the same? He is 11(fifth grd) and struggles with fine and gross motor skills. Writting is his biggest *academic* problem right know. His gross motor skills, are very embarassing for him because he can not do the same things his peers can do. He also has LD in processing which only compounds his fine motor issues when trying to write, word identity, spelling, processing the letters to get them onto the paper etc. Have you ever read Sensory Integration and the Child, by A. Jean Ayers? We worked with an OT outside of school with this for quite some time but ins. and financial - we don’t now. He does recieve PT and OT in school but I am on the down side of feeling maybe nothing will help much. He is an intelligent person. He asks me why things have to be so hard for him. If only we had all the answers. Has your son been tested for other LD issues? Maybe he’s dealing with more than one issue as well. Hope you get some answers. Deb
