ASAP homeschool, help?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello everyone,

I have decided to pull my 6th grade daugther out of school and homeschool. I will be pulling her out of our district this week. We have tried several things and nothing works. She is in the process of getting reevaluated with our new health insurance thank goodness. The schools simply cannot help her. We are hiring a lawyer to help us with the district. Our goal is to recieve funding from the district inorder to put her in part time private school like Linda Mood-Bell along with homeschooling. Has anyone on this board been successful in recieving money from the district for homeshooling?

I have been on this board about my daughter before so some of you might remember. Her name is Madeline and she has epilepsy and LD and I have been told NLD. We just got approval for her to be evaluated at the “Mind Insistute” thru our new health insurance, so we can look at possbile Asbergers (sp) as well.

We have trusted the school district for too long but at this point they simply cannot help my daughter, the trainning is not there. As most of you are fully aware, until they put more money into special ed, these kids are left on there own.

I would love to hear what others have done. Since I’m pulling her out imediately I would like to get advice on what I can do while we wait for possible funding. It may not happen but we have to try.

Thanks so much for any help,

JanineKay

I think audiblox is an excellent program for NLD type issues.

It is relatively inexpensive and done at home.

http://www.resourceroom.net/homeschooling/index.asp might have some helpful information for you.

You could spend the time — after a nice “spring break” — figuring out a daily/weekly routine that accomplishes what you want to accomplish and stil leaves soem time for “having a life” — which you get to define… could be doing things around the house that will teach life skills (cooking one meal a week for the family, say) or pursuing a personal potentialy life-long interest (astronomy, cycling, whatever). I’d build in some time for shared reading, perhaps keeping math skills building..

I do not think hiring a lawyer in this case will be profitable for you. The law is very clear about homeschooling children and their right to not provide services to them. This is an area that many people are lobbying to have changed in the “IDEA revamping” - but as of now, once you disenroll your child in school - they have absolutely no obligation.
