Hello, I am resource room, pull-out teacher working with kids 3rd through 8th grade. During the last couple of annual review meetings my analysis of the student’s independent reading level was one or two grade levels higher than what the school psychologist found. I’ve been using the Qualitative Reading Inventory to assess reading level, as well as the daily work I do with my students. My question is simply, what methods of testing and assessment (formal and informal) should I use in order to get an accurate measure of a student’s independent, instructional and frustation reading level??
Thanks,
Kyle

Re: assessment
As a diagnostician, I use the Diagnostic Assessments of Reading in addition to the WJIII to provide a more informal assessment. The results are similar to an IRI but also assess word identification, word analysis, oral and silent reading, spelling and word meaning. Its simple to administer and I have found the results to be very supportive of the results from WJIII. I believe it is published by Riverside.
I like to use a standardized test like Woodcock-Johnson Reading Mastery, especially since it’s got separate Word Attack, Word ID and comprehension subtests (when I get a kiddo with comprehension ‘way over word attack, it’s a red flag that they’re missing on the ol’ “how to sound out words” part of reading — and when I don’t, I know to look for otehr issues).
