Behavior management

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have recently taken over a self contained class of 4,5,6 grade LD students while their teacher is on maternity leave. I am having a terrible time getting students through this transition. Their behavior is atrocious. One of the biggest problems is they are mean to each other (10 boys, 5 girls). I mean REALLY mean. I am looking for suggestions on how to help them learn to be nice. Thanks

First, please know that 15 special ed children at a time is a handful for even the best. Your only early hope is to capture the class with your personality - directing their every move. High level activities, surprise, fun and unexpected rewards for those playing along with you. Bring donuts one day - believe me - they’ll notice them - let them find out how to get one…..and that’s up to you.

Using food is not the healthiest intervention, but it sounds like you’re in deep. Bottom line - take control, have fun. Ken Campbell, President, Florida Council for Children with Behavior Disorders.

Wow! You have a crew! I can relate! A website that helped me was www.disciplinehelp.com It can help with management and pinpointing certain behaviors to develop strategies for. A great book is titled The Tough Kid Book. Many excellent ideas and strategies for classroom and individual behavior management. Also, Ken’s advice is perfect. I remember when I took over my first SC-BD class…. Best of luck!! :o)
