books on tape

What’s your opinion … reading low level instructional books in an inclusive 5th grade classroom or listening to grade level books on tape?

It all depends on the student. My dd hated books on tape but did much better with e-books on the computer. There are several programs for Text-To-Speech which are easy to use. They not only read the book but highlight the words so the student reads in a multi-modal fashion - visual and auditory. It can also help students who have visual tracking issues.

It also depends on the students level of understanding. If they can understand the higher level books and only struggle with the reading, then anything that gives them the higher level will increase their abilities. Its especially helpful for kids with higher IQ’s who are easily bored with the lower level that the read at.
