bringing out strengths and weaknesses

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What are some ways you have brought out your child’s strengths and focused on those same strengths your child has during the teaching part of your day as homeschoolers? I am beginning to plan for homeschooling next year for one of my children and while I have some ideas and I am preparing for some of the outside help for remediations, such as LMB for reading, I would really like for his strengths to come out so that we can turn learning and “schooling” in to successful accomplishments. Rather than “here we go again - when do the disappointments begin?” which has been his experience, I want him to be proud and say “man - that was fun, and that was Great - now I understand.”

Thank you for your post and sorry for not getting back with you sooner. He is 11 years old and his main interests are in anything outside. He is a fantastic fisherman; has won some fishing tournaments. He is very good driving various moving transportation, such as golf cart, motorized scooter, small boats. (such as you would find on a small pond - two seater with small engine) He is a very good bicyclist. He is not very good in team sports. I think it has to do with his co-ordination or visual processing. (He has completed vision therapy.) He is a good swimmer but not on a swim team.
