Calcu-ladders

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Looking for summer workbook program to help 9 yr old with math facts. Anybody use Calcu-ladders? Is this how you spell it? Do you know who publishes it? Is it helpful? Thanks!

We have CalcuLadders. I can look up the publisher if you need it. Each workbook (covers approximately one grade level of math problems) is about $14. It’s available from Rainbow Resource at http://www.rainbowresource.com (ask them for their wonderful printed catalog, as their website doesn’t include any descriptions) and several other homeschooling websites.

If the problem is learning math facts, Math Facts the Fun Way is probably faster. Website is http://www.citycreek.com.

CalcuLadders is more for developing speed in using the math facts than it is for actually learning the math facts. If you do get CL, plan on doing one worksheet a day regularly — for a total of 5 to 10 minutes max. The goal is to complete a worksheet accurately in about 3 minutes in order to move on to the next level of worksheet. It works for most children. Really slow children can get discouraged. My dd, who is very slow in computation, does better with Quarter Mile Math software, which isn’t quite as intimidating to her. (QMM website is http://www.thequartermile.com)

Both approaches work on math drill to develop speed and accuracy. Both should be limited to 5 or 10 minutes a day. Both work for most kids if you’re patient and do it every day.

Especially if the issue is memorizing — go to my site at www.resourceroom.net, click on “math” and try the online practice :)

There is also a neat book that takes the kiddo all the way through, conceptually, starting with the zeroes & ones and tens and gradually building the tough ones. I’m biased — I liked it enough to get in touch with the author ‘cause there’s nothing on this side of the pond (the original version was British), and put together the American version and do a workbook to go with it.

resource room (sometimes that works and makes a link… sometimes it doesn.t..)
