I found an SLP within our HMO who does this testing. My son is scheduled for a 5 PM appt - this was the only aftyer school appt they had. H is ADHD meds will be out of his system by 5. Is it wrong to have him tested without them? Also, the tester has none of his other testing info. Am I wasting our time?
Re: CAPD testing - do it on ADHD MEDS?
It will have limited value, unless you need him to perform poorly enough to demonstrate a need.
You wouldn’t need a whole lot of other information for something as specific as this, I wouldn’t think.
I would want to know if she does this on a regular basis, or if she’s just willing to do it… in which case it will also have less value than if it were done by somebody who had experience and expertise.
Amy, the truth is, only audiologists can diagnose APD. Speech pathologists can diagnose receptive language delays that may indicate APD, but they cannot diagnose it. A speech/language eval is a good idea for any child with suspected APD, though, as there must be some communication problems causing concern. There are some SLP’s who are also audiologists, so perhaps that is the case here. But you need to call and ask them about the medication. An APD specialist I have spoken with says he DOES want the child medicated for APD testing if they are also ADHD. But 5:00 pm after a full day of school is really not a good time for any kind of testing, as far as I am concerned.
