co-teaching

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a parent and am wondering if the bit of news I got about next year is good or not so good. In our IEP meeting the Resource teacher told us that she had wonderful news. Next year (for 5th grade) she will be co-teaching for math. In hind-sight I’m not so sure why it’s wonderful for us since my son does not need remediation in math, but with that in place they may do co-teaching in other areas as well. This was their response to us asking for more intense remediation in reading and written expression. We would like for him to have 1:1 help because he has fallen behind in these areas and they keep putting the same goals on the IEP which never seem to get met. For three years we have gotten the response of “well, don’t worry too much about that, in ___ grade we really focus on that.” I really feel that this new “co-teaching” strategy is a money saving device that stretches the resource teacher between all four of the 5th grade classes. How can I be sure that my son will get the help that he needs if he has to share his time with the entire class for the 40-50 minutes that she may be in there? I just think this is wrong. What can we do? Can we do something about this co-teaching arrangement before it is too late?

you are right to ask for a one on one. that might be the difference to his success. you are your childs best advocate. fight for the one on one. it is your right as a parent. don’t give up.
