Deafness and LDs

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone direct me to information about a child who is deaf and exhibiting very definite signs of dysgraphia/dyslexia/dyscalcula. I am at my wits end with school. I do not accept the idea “Oh that is just because she is deaf”. My daughter is a well behaved and very eager to please. She loves school. She is a little doll. She is bright, funny and has a personality that is unbelivable. But, she struggles terribly with math, writing, memorization, etc. I have searched for info about deaf and LD and cannot find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions? The “Oh she is just deaf” is just not going to cut it any longer. Thanks for any help you can give me.

As your believe your daughter’s issues do not stem from her deafness, perhaps you might just use information about learning differences. Dysgraphia/dyslexia/dyscalculia would be differently remediated in a deaf child but general information about those issues and how they present might help you.
Did you search this website? It has good information and I always recommend a book by Mel Levine called Educational Care.
If your daughter does not attend a school specifically for the hearing impaired, you might contact one and ask their school psychologist or guidance counselor to point you in the direction of the specific kind of information you’re looking for.
