Hi:

Does anyone know if there is a difference between phonological awareness and phonemic awareness? Also, does anyone know the definitions of these terms?

Thanks,

Margo

there is a big difference..The reading Genie has a good description of phonemic awareness and phonological awareness

To further define phonemic awareness, “It involves a more or less explicit understanding that words are composed of segments of sound smaller than a syllable, as well as knowledge, or awareness, of the distinctive features of individual phonemes themselves. It is this latter knowledge of the identity of individual phonemes themselves that continues to increase after an initial understanding of the phonemic structure of words is acquired [Torgeson, 1999].

phonological awareness is knowing that words are made of syllables, onset and rhyme but not being aware of the phonemes used in particular…
