Diagnostic Tests

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am interested in finding out what other schools use for diagnostic testing in math for students who are performing below grade level. We have used the old Key Math test in the past and are looking for either updating that or trying something else. Any suggestions?

Ellen,
My district uses Key Math as well. But this year my principal told me to find something different because Key Math takes too long to give.

My partner sometimes uses the KETA, but I still prefer the Key Math.

My district uses the Saxon Math program, but I very much dislike the placement assessment. I’ve also used the Math Their Way assessment, but mostly for my Kindergarten students.

I, too, would like to know what other people use.

I give either the KeyMath or the WIAT. But, usually the results of these tests only match their computation abilities. If math is not their area of disability, they come out average or better. However, results on these tests do not relate well with the math curriculums in the classrooms right now. I would venture to say that whatever score they get in standardized reading tests will be similar to how they are actually functioning in classroom math at this time. A student with good reading skills with poor math skills can at least use a calculator and get by. A student with poor reading skills will not understand what the problem is asking him to do, and he is not going to understand what he needs to do on the calculator—especially in multi-step problems.
