Discover Math program - any input on this would be great!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

anyone heard about or used the math program called Discover Math?

this program was developed by Steven Turch in Canada and has been used at his reading clinics.

any input or links to more info on this math program would be great.

Thank you.

That would be Truch :-)

Not much about it online; a $20/month subscription service to help educators make a biz out of private practice has a plug for them, but I’d imagine that one thing you get for your subscription would be plugs on the public pages;

However, he is a co-author of Lindamood-Bell’s LiPS program’s book, which is a pretty good credential in my book, and he’s penned a couple of other cited items.

He’ll also be doing a conference presentation on it in British Columbia in October — let’s all take a road trip, okay? If it’s really an honest-to-God structured, systematic, multisensory approach to math then we should have to fight for seats…

thanks for your reply sue!

sure, i am up for the road trip!!!

yes, i know that Truch has used the LIPS program extensively and has conducted some research of his own on it. He has now moved on to using both Discover Reading and Discover Math. both programs developed by him.

it does sound almost too good to be true. a real structured, multisensory math program that supposedly does not use skill and drill to death….i wish i could find more info about it.

we may just jump in and do the program. or some variation of it. i have found a person in california who will work with my son this summer and does both PACE and this Discover Math. he is very familair with Lindamood Bell and from our phone converstations i am feeling like he would be a really strong mentor type tutor for my son.

so, we may just dive in.

thanks again

Discover Math is only available if you attend the training in Canada. It is a remedial program. I had some email correspondence with Steve Truch when I was looking at reading programs. He actually did extensive work with both LiPS and Phonographix. But travel to Canada seemed impratical to me when I could drive less than an hour to LMB training and I had already had PG training at that time.

The other math program that I think looks excellent and similar in philosophy to LMB is Making Math Real. But it also requires training, as any good program should.

the person i have found to work with my son has been trained in discover math. he has also been using the PACE program (processing and cognitive enhancement ..i think is what pace stands for..).

i have gotten some good feedback through references on this person. i have also spoken with him in detail about my son and his needs. i have a gut feeling about this person. i feel he will be able to connect with my son - something at this point i feel is sorely needed before any real learning will be internalized - as my son’s self esteem has been pretty beaten down after this last school year in math.

i am optimistic, hopeful and feeling really postive that this teacher will design an appropriate summer program focusing on math for my son. that is a good feeling. and will keep you all posted.
thanks!!!
