Down Syndrome and inclusion

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Just wondering how inclusion is working for classrooms with severely cognitively impaired students? Any cool lessons or techniques to share? We are doing pretty well, but it definitely depends upon the classroom teacher and his/her acceptance and willingness to work with the child/inclusion teacher.

One thing I would like to remind everyone. The least restrictive environment is required by law. Teachers cannot decide that they do not wish to have kids with special needs in their classrooms. IDEA was revised almost 7 years ago…time to get compliant!!! We have to find ways to make things work. Its not easy, but it can be very rewarding.
