I have a young lady in my class that may suffer from dysgraphia. She has trouble writing almost anything that I give her. However, when I observe her, she engages in off-task behavior ( walking around the room, talking to others, asking me irrelevant questions, etc). I have founs that multiple choice assesments are good for her but she tries to escape from writing. She is diagnosed SLD but is borderline COG MILD. What can I do to get heer to write more besides extending the time limit. It takes her 1 1/1 hours to write four sentences if she is not supervised.
The avoidance behaviour is certainly typical of someone who has difficulty with a subject. It may really be dysgraphia, but is also very likely to be poor previous teaching and being allowed to get away with avoidance behaviours. She clearly needs direct teaching and supervision — some kind of one-to-one tutoring with you or another teacher. First you need to find out what she finds so difficult, and then work on those weak points.
