Edmark software

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone used the Edmark software Levels 1 and 2? I teach an LD class grades K-5 and my principal has told me I have some money to spend. All of my material is getting old as I have been teaching for about 25 years. I need to know about really good reading, language arts, and spelling programs also. We use the Saxon math program. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Which Edmark are you looking at? Let’s Go Read! An Island Adventure is definitely above average… but others are pretty run-of-the-mill edutainment without much pedagogy behind them.

Andra,

What about Earobics to help with phonemic awareness?

www.earobics.com

I use Phono-Graphix to teach reading decoding (get book “Reading Reflex” to take a look at it), Great Leaps (3-5th) for reading fluency after decoding (www.greatleaps.com), plan to use AVCO Sequential Spelling (www.spelling.org), and EPS has tons of good materials for LD language arts (www.epsbooks.com).

Most of the materials I have had for years are really ineffective and not in line with the current reading research. If you haven’t already, I’d strongly suggest reading all the articles under LD In Depth in the reading category. I’ve taken serveral reading trainings in the last couple of years including Phono-Graphix and Lindamood Bell in order to update my skills.

We are presently looking at a program called Reading Academy which is not edutainment but is based onreading research. It is a K-12 program and the school that is presently using it is a K-6 school that is reporting some very good results.

Sound Reading Solutions has a software product that re-enforces phoenemic awareness and the sound-symbol connection. There are different versions based on age, but I think they pretty much go over the same ground, except perhaps the lowest level. You can view a demo on their site if you have sufficient PC power. Otherwise call and they’ll send you a demo disc. I know Earobics gets a lot of kudos, but my dd found it incredibly boring. She did the SRS program willingly.
