Hi!
I have the opportunity to host an ex ed information session for high school regular ed teachers. You all know why it needs to be done. There seems to be many misconceptions about what LD is, how unfair accommodations are, etc. etc. Plus, some teachers are just apprehensive when they find out that an ex ed student is coming to their classrooms.
Unfortunately, I have only 40 minutes to describe accommodations, dispel myths and provide helpful information. What are you opinions about how/what I should specifically address? One of our teachers suggested showing a short clip of a Lavoie video before we begin talking.
Thanks for your help!!
Re: Educating teachers
Definitly show the clip from the video about what its really like to be an LD student. Maybe even do a senario with the teachers. That way u get them to really understand what your LD students go through on a daily basis.
The Lavoie video really is the best thing I’ve seen for getting past both the “it’s where we put stupid children whose mothers don’t want them called retarded” and the “well, they’re brilliant, they just can’t read” models of Learning DIsabilities.
