I have a 13 yr. old son with ADHD. He is struggling with focus and organization the most. He is very bright and gets poor grades because he misses so much information. Being behind in the class room makes the situation worse because he feels anxious and expresses that anxiety through restlessness. I’m really uncomfortable with medicines because a chronic fatigue condition that I developed as a result of prolonged use of medicines that were supposed to be safe.
I’m looking for alternative approaches that are effective. I’ve been told that you either want to stimulate part of the brain, dexadrine/ritalin, or slow down the over firing of the neurons of the brain.
So far I’ve tried DHA from the omega 3 fish oils, multi-vitamis, pantothenic acid, and a complex for the brain to stimulate focus and alertness. The complex includes DMAE, ginko biloba, some anti-oxidants, B vitamins and phosphotydal serine. He has improved from this, but he is still having problems. I recently start Gaba which is supposed to slow down the over firing of the brain so the child is less reactive.
If anybody out there has had good experiences from an alternative approach I would love to hear about it
Thanks
A concerned mom

Re: effective alternative medicine for ADHD that helps focus
I think that you should just relax because you are doing a fine job with your child that it just takes a little time for him to maintain his on his own so just pay so mind to his problems because there is not one child who does not have a special need in their life. Keep up the good work!
AS I have stated in one of my other posts. Ritilan is being given out too freely as well as the other meds.
I am in my 50’s and meds were not an option for me. Yes, I had to struggle and not only that, I had to do it on my own. Many of my free hours were devoted to pracricing writing or spelling oe on and on.
But your child is luckier than me. He has you. He has a mom that knows what his problem is as mine did not. He has a mom who is on the net trying to find help and info to be able to bring back to him to try.
As I have implied. I am in my 50
‘s and have made it all this way and my carreer is the greatest i could have ever dreamed of.
I will say however that it was only about 7 years ago when I began to use laughter as my medicine. That is what changed my whole world around. I keep a journal titled, “I Love Lucy” because she is who I remind me of. If it were up to me to do all over again..i would do the dsame. No meds. let them learn with assistance and understanding. One of my sons went for his bachelors in business managment and works in Ma. at Texas Instament. My other boy manages a rest. and let me tell you the memory on this kid amazes me each and every time I go to the resteraunt.
My Daughter was the one who had problems but as she became an adult she was able to understand. She was not diagnosed as a child as she showed no symptoms. As an adult she was diagnosed.
