experience with Read Naturally?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi everybody, I’ve been posting recently as guest mom but finally figured out how not to get that message about someone else having my user name. I’ve been reading some old threads and am thinking it is about time to give my 11 year old a decoding break at home and just work on fluency. Can anyone who has anyone used both Read Naturally and Great Leaps give me some comparative pros and cons? I’ve read about both and can’t decide. Thanks for any and all suggestions

I have both. In the classroom setting I like Read Naturally. It is more expensive but easier with groups. GL is also good. It has more levels as she moves up for one packaged price. One on one, GL should be just fine and it costs less. If I was a mom, I’d chose GL over RN. If I was a teacher, who could get the school to pay, I’d use RN. If I was just a tutor, I just use GL. In your case, you are more like a tutor so I think I’d tell you to order GL.

We use Read Naturally in our classroom and are happy with it. The stories, levels, procedures all work well. I have not used Great Leaps. Take a minute and look at Read Right (www.readright.com). It has really improved my son’s fluency with twice weekly telephone tutoring (worked for us!!).

Oh, and don’t make a decision without looking at QuickReads. I saw it recommended by Torgesen and decided to order a few levels. It looks very good.

Note: they do sell single copies of the student books at $9.95 each. You just have to specify that when you call to order.
