Between explicit and direct instruction, which do you think is better to use with students with Specific Learning Disabilities? Does it depend on the age or the subject being taught?

It depends on the needs if the child. This is the nitty gritty of the IEP—individualized instruction. In reality, most schools cannot do such so they semcookiemcutter programs (albeit many are sucessful) and those who learn and can and those who Ned more intensive remediation may be stuck with the cookie cutter programs unless there is strong instructional leadership at the top level.
