Can anyone tell me about Explode the Code and thier experiences with it? My daughter is 6 and they use this in the Resource Room. She is dyslexic. Is this an O-G based program? Any info would be good. Thanks
Re: Explode the Code
I agree with Anitya ~ I have used Explode the Code workbooks for over six years. They are excellent supplements and provide good practice, once the teacher has introduced certain vowels, blends, etc. Book 1 is all short vowels, Book 2 is blends, Book 3 introduces long vowels with silent e, and so on. If this is the only reading instruction being given then you should be concerned; however, if it is being used to provide additional practice it is fine. I frequently send several pages home as homework after we have taught and reviewed certain patterns.
First of all, please understand, the “program” is the tools your child’s teacher uses to teach her. “Explode the Code” is a perfectly fine tool to incorporate into the instructional program that should include multi-sensory teaching and plenty of guided practice. I have purchased several levels of this program, though not the first 3 or so, and I do sometimes have students use these “skill pages” for additional practice with the skill or skills I am focusing on at that time.
It is a series of “workbooks” actually in “blackline master” form that start with beginning phonics skills and work through to advanced phonics skills and patterns. Perfectly good tool for a teacher. The program does not do the teaching, the teacher does.
