Fast Forward program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 2nd grader is scheduled to start 6 weeks of Fast Forward soon, but I’m not sure it is what she needs. She doesn’t seem to have a auditory proccessing issue. Her disabilities are with memory. Personally, I don’t think it is memory so much as information retrieval. It just takes her awhile to “remember” what sounds letters make, etc. She tested out quite high on a vocabulary test. If she has a memory issue, then how did she retain the meanings to these sophisticated words? I think she has it stored, but there is some problem or delay in retrieving it.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Do you think Fast Forward will help?

There is a BIG difference between your daughter’s memory for vocabulary and phonological memory. She is definitely having problems with auditory processing if she can’t remember the phonemic sounds that are associated with the orthographic (written symbols that represent the sounds in our oral language). She has a good vocabulary because she has probably been exposed to lots of talking and interacting with her family, school and peers. I have had kids test out well on vocabulary but they didn’t know the Alphabetic Principal and had poor phonemic awareness. FFW will probably help her develop her auditory memory for the sounds in words.
