Foreign teacher desperate for help

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a special education teacher in the Philippines. I’ve been teaching kids with Autism and M.Retardation for 2 years already.I got hired by one of the public schools in Waukegan,Ill. They said that I’ll be handling LD’s. Do you think they’ll make me teach reg students with a number of LD’s included or I’ll just serve as an on call resource teacher? Isn’t it that inclusion is the way you do things in U.S? What is mostly practiced here in the Philippines is the one-on-one kind of intervention and I’m kinda nervous bec I don’t think I’m ready to handle a big class of reg kids with LD’s included. Help! Thanks in advance![/b]

Greetings from Georgia, USA

I am a Sp Ed Teacher in rural Georgia. I have been in the program for 3 years. I teach LD,MI, EBD and MR all together in one class. I am seeking interrelated certification which certifies you in every area of Sp Ed. The inclusion programs vary from state to state. I had an inclusion class this past year in which I had various exceptionalities in the class of reg ed students. The other teacher was the person who did the teachings and I did the walking and observing and assisting students as they needed help. So inclusion puts you with another teacher and in a reg ed class with SOME Sp Ed students. If you are a Sp Ed teacher your job should be to teach Sp Ed students of which the students will be classified Sp Ed. Inclusion classes are GREAT! and seem to work for LD and BD students more so then MI or MR as their level is usually much lower then the grade level which you are teaching. I hope this has helped somewhat but you do need to remember every system has THEIR way of handling class loads and Sp Ed Programs. Good LUCK and DONT STRESS over IT :) Michele
