Fun observation

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a sixtyh grade boy on my caseload who has a history of school problems. He has a low IQ (except for similarities at an 11!!). He is highly ADHD. His math skills are at second grade level. He can hardly write (really has a nonverbal LD profile).

Anyway, he is taking meds for his ADHD, I believe that new adderal xr. He has discovered the joy of reading. Yesterday he walked through campus with his nose in a book. His fifth grade teacher was thunderstruck. It is so great to see things taking a turn for the better for a child.

I did not start this to pitch this, but I think I will anyway. In the past 10 days I have listened to 3-4 parents and teachers applaud this new adderal xr. I have students who have been switched to this med. just recently. The wonderful thing is that is long acting, the kids don’t lose weight, they eat well, they focus and get work done AND they still seem to retain their lovable personalities. You know how ritalin, when it achieved the desire, often seemed to tone down the personality and energy in the child? I had parents over the years that took their child off the med. because they wanted “their child” back. The kids on this form of adderal are still bubbly, smily, whatever personality they always exudec, but more in control of themselves and available to learn.

Two of my colleagues at school have children taking this, and 2-3 of my students are as well. Everybody is more than happy.

Hi Anitya,

My son took the Adderall XR about a year ago - and was psychotic. Definitely not the right drug for him. All meds react with all children differently - I’m delighted the Adderall worked for the ones at your school! :-) My son takes a combination of Wellbutrin and Ritalin - that works for him.
