The future of Educational Technology

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m a graduate student studying educational technology in NY. I would like to know if anyone could tell me what is the demand for an individual in this position? I know that educational technology is new in my state, I am curious to know how popular it is in other states, too.

Educational technology is new?

I don’t think so.

Perhaps you meant that degrees in educational technology are new; they are, somewhat, though I could have had one in 1999 and the program wasn’t brand new.

Educational technology is also rather popular, in most places, depending on what technology the school could afford to purchase.

If you meant people with backgrounds in educational technology, then that depends on the system. It’s a whole lot easier to get hired into any given position with documented skills in ET (but work on the communication skills, too), but you need to beware being given a mess of added technology duties to do “in your spare time” and be sure you get time and compensation for them. Some school systems have full-time positions integrating technology into the curriculum (but even there you’d have to figure out how much of your duties would be tech support andhow much actually implementing stuff).
