Hi. I have an 11 y/o daughter with a NLD diagnosed 2 years ago. She has most of her difficulty in math and this year is no exception. She has an IEP and is in Title 1 Math. Despite great efforts from the school, myself and my husband and most of all from our daughter, she is having great difficulty understanding, applying and retaining the concepts in begining Geometry. Angles, triangle types, 3 D figures etc. are so abstract she is having a terrible time. Her teacher keeps telling me that many children do poorly in the outset of this type of math and that I shouldn’t worry. Test 1&2 of the marking period she rec’d a 64 and a 70. Obviously she isn’t retaining this stuff.I myself LOVED Geom. and am having a grand time helping her learn and study but with no success. Does anyone know of any resources -printed, models, whatever that would be helpful as a teaching aide.
Re: Geometry Help
PASSWORD>aa4um5Lp2CxdUJackie,I don’t know if this will help a kid with NLD, but my boys have been having a great time doing work with geoboards. Maybe working with geoboards would help her more than just working with pictures in the math book. If you go to the Swarthmore Math Forum you can search the Math Library for geoboard, polygon, or polyhedron and find some info that might help. Here’s a link for lessons with geoboards that looks good.http://mathforum.com/trscavo/geoboards/Here’s the link to Math Forumhttp://forum.swarthmore.edu/teachers/Hope this helps.Jean: Hi. I don’t have any resources to send you to, except you could try to ask this question at on of the websites like nldonline that deals specifically with this sort of disorder. The general rule of thumb with NLD as I understand it is to make everything as verbal and linear as possible. So… She could make definition cards with short visual cues as associations and memorize the definitions maybe? Like- an acute angle is an angle of less than 90’ etc., and then cluster the definitions that seem to go together into groups. She can even- and this might be better- put the definitions in her own words. The pictures are just to form an association- it is the words she will remember. Hmmm- I will think more about this.Robin
