Gifted/LD-Dyslexia

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anybody out there have a elementary dyslexic child participating in a gifted program? My son is a gifted/LD(dyslexic) 3rd grader. We have a pretty good IEP in place and a GREAT private Orton Gillingham tutor. He may be placed in the gifted class next year. We need to push his strengths but he is very aware that “those” kids do things that he can’t do…like read way above grade level and remember math facts. Anybody have any experience they could share or any advice they could give?

My older son was for a period of time in a self-contained gifted program and was also diagnosed for learning differences. He became very aware that it was much harder for him to pay attention than it was for other kids and that their speech was much more distinct than his and they were far more verbal than he was.

I’m not sure, though, I understand what your question is. Is it if your son can succeed in that gifted class? Have you visited the class yourself? I always have found that very helpful and I did that when my son moved into that class. I needed to see and “feel” the pace of the classroom, where I thought he would fit into the big picture of this new classroom, what kind of material was presented, what the other kids were like.

No matter what your question is, I would always suggest considering going and visiting the classroom to see what you see.
