Good Dictionary with word usage examples?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a high school student with poor language skills and was wondering if there is a dictionary out there which gives more examples for proper word usage than the usual dictionary. She is required to learn vocabulary in her English class and use the words appropriately in a sentence. I have found that she has trouble with the appropriateness of her sentences because of not having picked up on the word in everyday language. If there was a dictionary which gave more examples, I thought she might be able to do her work more independently.

This kid needs to dialogue with a conversational partner and also would benefit from diagraming sentences, dictation of sentences using the words in sentences and then drawing pictures with the sentences to help with comprehension.

I personally don’t think a dictionary is going to cut…But, DK makes some picture dicitonaries that are great. Is she on the SLP’s caseload at school to work on her weak language skills?

Student dictionaries for middle school aged students are lots better than “collegiate” ones.

See if you can cut the quantity of the vocab so she’s got half a chance to learn some of it.

THere are some more ideas for vocab. at http://www.resourceroom.net/Comprehension/index.asp
