great leaps

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m new to this site and have a question about the Great Leaps program. I’ll be working with high school students, many of whom are non-readers. Has anyone ever had any experience with this program and can give me some feedback? Also, if there are other prgrams that might be useful, I’d appreciate hearing about them. Thanks.

I have worked with Great Leaps. It works well but you need to keep in mind that you have to have a reading program. Great leaps is a supplement to what you are teaching. I also worked with High schoolers. They were making great progress, but i had to go because my internship ended. I have also tutored using the “why jhonny cant read” book. the book is found in just about any library. It also worked very well. Good luck

I agree with the other poster. Great Leaps is meant to be used as a supplement. You still need a good reading program. My recommendation for that would be the Phono-Graphix approach. Although training is nice, you can implement PG even if you aren’t formally trained. The book “Reading Reflex” by Carmen & Geoffrey McGuiness is $16 at most bookstores and gives you a good idea of the method. It has been used quite successfully to remediate teens in reading.

I returned last night from a training in Greenville, NC. While there I got the results of Project Heart in which college tutors tutored at risk students - most adolescents. With Great Leaps the only intervention reading socres over the past year soared. The interest generated at the meeting was very high. The excitment over the results was genuine.

It remains the intention of Diarmuid,Inc. to recommend Great Leaps as a supplement (for fluency and behavioral incentives), yet clear evidence from Florida, Kentucky, and North Carolina show it can stand alone need be.

Personally, I like it when Great Leaps is paired with O/G/Phono-Graphic/Linda Mood Bell/ or Reading Mastery.

Hi Ken,
I have always used Read Naturally to improve my students fluidity due to the fact that Fairfax provided the resources. I am now going to purchase your program due to the fact that I don’t think that Loudoun County has any program. Do you have any school prices on Great Leaps if I can convince Loudoun to purchase your program?
