Has anyone heard of or used the Barton Reading and Spelling System? It’s said to be based on Orton-Gillingham, but easier to implement and doesn’t require as extensive training. Any information would be great ~ thanks!
Re: Has anyone heard of ?
Thanks for the information, it’s good to know. I’ve ordered some sample materials, I figure as long as it’s free I’ll look at it! Why does it seem that all the good things are so expensive???
Yep...she is reputable and very good.
I met Susan Barton about 4 years ago when she was piloting her OG program. She trained me in OG and helped me help my daughter…
Re: Has anyone heard of ?
Well, they are expensive because not just anybody can put them together, it takes a lot of time (as in time you aren’t being paid for) to put it together *and* work out the glitches so it works for many people *and* make it so it makes sense to someone else,
… it takes resources to produce it so that it looks better than what you’d print out on your dot matrix printer, it takes resources to go to conferences to let people know that you’ve got something…
It’s much cheaper to come up with something that works for those scads of basically neurologically typical (NT diagnosis :-)) kiddos who just need some structure and extra help — lots tougher to *really* work in the multisensory stuff and the systematic structre that a smaller marketing group needs.
I also talked to Sue Barton at an IDA conference (costs a cool grand in expenses when you work in the booth cost and travel and lodging, and that’s if you *aren’t* giving anything away) and looked at her materials. She knows her stuff.
Karen Rooney has also put together a parent-usable package that might be a bit cheaper - I think it’s krooney.com but there’s a link to it from the “links” section of my site at www.resourceroom.net, and other programs too.
We often forget these things
Those of us in public schools often forget just how much risk it is to produce a product. All we seem to see are the shrinking dollars…and rising Sr. Administrative salary levels…
Every now & again a reminder of another perspective is a good thing!
My child’s school ordered the first kit just to look at. It looks good, but the whole program would be very expensive. It does have training videos for each kit. Our school opted for Phono-Graphix instead.
There are people on this board who have met Susan Barton and they have given positive feedback in the past. I believe it was Patti and Sue.
