Help! I need a good Reading Program for 3rd-5th grade LD ki

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My principal has finally told us that we can order a curriculum for our class. We have over 60 LD students at up til now we haven’t had a reading program. I need to know what works with these children. I need something that will work with my high and low kids. I have heard good things about SRA Corrective Reading, EDMARK,and the Herman Program. I haven’t heard very much from teachers who have used these or other programs and saw much success. I have only heard about most of those programs through the grapevine.

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice at all about any and all programs that you have used and have seen good results with. If possible I’d like to find a program that intergrates the reading with comprehension and writing also. Thank you so much for any advice you can offer.

In my resource class, I use and love Edmark. It is an excellent choice for those kiddos that haven’t developed their phonemic awareness skills yet, but are demonstrating some sight word reading ability and they can retain/recall the learned words. I also use SRA’s BRS (basic reading skills) series. It is old, but you can’t beat the structured phonetic approach and fluency practice it provides. For small group or one on one, Phono-Graphix (readamerica.net) is wonderful. The materials for that program are relatively inexpensive. Hope this helps!

I would also recommend PhonoGraphix (you can get info at readamerica.net).

The most respected LD private schools in my area use it and I have heard their administrators and speech/language pathologists speak very highly of it.

Have you tried the Phonic Remedial Drill by Academic Therapy Publications - that is a good program to teach word attack skills. You can supplement those with high interest low vocabulary Classic Literature Series by High Noon books. These books greatly develop reading fluency.
