My son is 6 and will be seven in January. He is having problems learning his letters and their sounds. He can tell me what they are in order, but as soon as I take them out of order he can’t tell me what they are. I have been teaching him his letters since he was two as I have done with all my children so I don’t understand how 5years later he still does not know them. The biggest problem is he doesn’t want to. He has absolutely no interest in learning anything. I think it’s because he finds it hard because of a learning disability and has given up. So now I can’t get any work out of him at all. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I fear at this rate he will never learn how to read. My husband also had a learning disability when he was a child and was put in the slow learning classes in school. I put my son in school for 5 weeks and he was treated so badly by his teacher that he became very angry and started acting out. When I met with her she had nothing nice to say about him at all and was talking to me right in front of him. So I pulled him back out to homeschool again and he went right back to normal. So I am not willing to put him through that again. But I am loosing my patience and don’t know what to do anymore. How do you teach a child that doesn’t want to learn and refuses to work? Please help! He can recognize 13 letters in the alphabet but that’s it. And it has been that way since last year.
I wrote up a long outline of a multisensory method for teaching the alphabet and sounds. I used this with a severely language handicapped boy, and it works. Inexpensive and simple, just takes time and effort but you are doing that already so you can suceed. Just email me and ask for my teaching reading outlines, free, no strings attached.
