I am a homeschooling mom with 3 children. One of whom is LD. The best diagnosis I can get is that she has short term memory difficulties and mental processing difficulties. So I have done some searching and the best I can find that fits her is the Visual memory processing(although she very much has characterics of the auditory memory difficulties as well). I am really at a loss of how to help her. She is going to be in 6th grade and is a full grade behind in some things but 2 grades behind in others. Putting her back in school is not an option as they didn’t think she had a problem.
Thank you for any help you can give me.
Re: Hi I just found this site and maybe you can help me...
I don’t know what testing has been done to come up with the diagnosis, so it’s possible that you might get better info by doing some additional testing. The first thing to rule out is problems with vision and/or hearing. An ordinary exam to determine if she needs glasses will not evaluatie visual tracking which can make a big difference in reading fluency. You need evaluation by a developmental optometrist to find out if she needs any type of vision therapy or eye exercices. You may also want to go to an audiologist to rule our Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Fast Forward is a program that has worked well for many kids with auditory processing problems.
The next step would be cognitive processing programs like PACE. These programs are supposed to improve the speed of cognitive processing, both auditory and visual, which then makes other learning tasks easier.
There are lots of programs- I’ve picked up some info from others on this board, but I don’t have personal experience with them, so others can probably give you better info. Check the LD in depth section for articles about processing disorders, or search the board for posts on PACE. Mary in MN has a lot of good posts about these issues.

Have an audiologist test for central auditory processing disorder. We suspected that our child had auditory processing difficulties. We had her tested by an audiologist and she not only confirmed it, but told us exactly
which subtypes she had and how to treat them! It was about $300.
check out www.joyceherzog.com. She is very good at explaining things and is very much knowing in the area of LD.
