Please help, after mant futile attempts to get the school system to work with my 15 y/o they have kicked him out of school. The school system is sending a teacher to our house 2 times a week for a total of four hours a week. The child is A.D.H.D. in a regular high school. They claim not to have the resources to deal with him. I have been in contact with the local school board but they only told me that they would stand behind the school. I am at the point that I want to file a discrimination suit on the grounds of his disability.
In the mean time i need to find some internet sites that will help my grade 10 child to understabd the school work for when the “teacher” is not here.
If anybody has ANY thoughts or suggestions PLEASE post them.
We are looking for web sites, school sites or any other sites that might help us help him with the school work.
I have my doubts that the school will send over all the books that will help him, so please help me, help my son.
Thank you very much
home schooling laws in Canada
Thanks for the web sites. The problem that I have encountered all along this battle is that the laws that apply to you in N.J. don’t apply here in Canada. I am fighting with a bunch of socer mom types. Their children don’t have any problems, so nobody else matter’s to them. But enough of my soap box. Like I said thaks for the lead.
Re: home schooling
Find the homeschooling groups in your area and join one as soon as you can.
They will be an enormous help to you in getting materials and just support for what you’re trying to do. Usually, you can find links to your state homeschooling organizations online. If not, ask for contacts at local educational supply stores or your local library.
Re: home schooling
Why not try medication? He could probably learn AND handle school? If he can’t handle school, how do you think he will do at a job?
I'M a SOCCER MOM AND my
daughter has a disability. What I have observed (and I have seen several on my daughter’s team) is that many parents (NOT just soccer moms) are in denial. Sad, and then who suffers? The kid. B/c parents are to proud to seek out the intervention that will help their kid.
Re: I'M a SOCCER MOM AND my
I’m a Soccer Mom, and take my Wrightslaw books and state regs to practice and give mini-tutorials for other parents with children in sped ;-)
Dear Todd,
I suggest that you check out the homeschooling websites www.homeschool.com and others. I can’t find the references, just do a search on the internet.
Secondly, double check with the state dept. of education, but I believe your son is entitled to 20 hours of instruction if he is on home instruction, not 4. That is what we do in NJ. Your child is also entitled by federal law, IDEA is the name of the law, to a “free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.” Check out any private schools in your area. If your public school cannot educate your child, they must send him to an appropriate private school and pay for the tuition and transportation.
I do not know what disabilities your child has, but if he has difficulty attending, finishing work, and/or reading and spelling, check out www.gwhizresources.com. That’s my website. In addition to being a Special Ed teacher and the parent of a young adult with LD, ADHD+, I write materials for students with special needs.
