I’m sorry … I posted back in May and failed to re-check the board (I forgot to check the box requesting that I get an email if there was a response) ANYWAY, for those of you that asked, yes I do actually homeschool w/an IEP because my School District was unable to provide appropriate services. We had a messy almost-Due Process hearing several years ago and this was our agreed-to settlement. My IEP covers only reading & math. We had several IEP meetings during the past month (ofcourse this was after they agreed to pay for this year’s “stuff” — they did that & I dropped my due process hearing request) and have managed to write two great IEPs and will now move into the “who will pay for services” legal contract …. verbally they have agreed to pay for 8 hrs of Lindamood-Bell each week for my younger son (who was rec’g 16 hours/wk this year) plus 4 hours with a tutor one day a week … For my older son they have agreed to pay for a private tutor (she has been coming to my home) for 12 hours/week. Homeschool laws in PA require 900 hours of instruction so this will cover almost 1/2. They will provide testing (just a DAB3 & reading inventory). I take care of everything else which includes about $15,000.00 in outside groups. It will cost them about 3x more than I will be paying. The reason that they do this is because they failed to provide appropriate educational services early on and it was easily proven … I know it sound bizzare but it really does work for the District & my children (I on the other hand wonder daily about the limits of my mental capabilities here!) There is one person within my District (actually in charge of the Pupil Services Dept) who constantly drops the ball but then the Asst. Super. steps in and “fixes” everything. My IEPs and legal agreement are VERY detailed this year so I don’t think I will have anymore trouble. To make this happen for your children, you actually have to allow the system to fail them and I wouldn’t recommend that to anyone … 5 years ago if they had offered me a million dollars OR appropriate educational services for my children, I would have opted for services!
wow, my child cannot learn in the traditional classroom, has an IEP, I have hired a tutor to “teach” her at home, 6 hours a week and the rest of the time she is in school. This arrangement has worked out great for her. The last IEP the principal announcec that I can no longer tutor her on school time, they want to educate her. Well they couldn’t for the past 3 yrs, and nothing has changed. They said that they will put her in a speciallized reading program to help her out, well shes reading above grade level!! They have no idea what she is even capable of. Her IEP was only about their recommendations and they had no interest in what I nor my psychologist had to say. It was this or that , make up your mind. Well I went right to the school board and I think they are on my side because I have a good reason for keeping her home sometimes, and we are only talking about 3 -1/2 days, on french days which she doesn’t do, but thats another story living in a province with no choices or rights in even having a special needs child in an english stream!! So you are very lucky because I don’t think I would get a penny towards paying for my tutor.
