How Can I get help for a college student?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My daughter just completed her second year of college. She is going to an in-state college and wants to be a teacher. Her grades have been very good these past two years, but she realizes that she always has to get extra help and try much harder then everyone else. To get into the teaching program, she must pass a Basic Skills test, and she has taken it twice and failed both times. She is extremely upset and is about to give up her dream of being a teacher. Like I have already stated. Her grades have been pretty good these past two years; she falls apart when it comes time to take tests. They allow 5 hours and she claims that is long enough, she just is not a test taker. I’m not sure what to do at this point to help her, I don’t know if the Basic Skills Test for teachers is something you can get a tutor for. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sandy

Hi, Sandy

Has she tried talking to the Disabled Student Office at her school? Tell them she suspects she has a LD. They will be able to tell how what accomindations and/or modifications are possible. Even if she is not LD, they may know of tutors who have worked for them and may be avaiable to work with your daughter.
