I have homeschooled for 2 years and my son seems to have all the symptoms of ADD but I’m not sure if it’s my teaching or if he really does have it. Where do I start and how?????
Re: How do I see if my child really has ADD
Take your child to someone who specializes in Developmental Cognitive Neurology.
If you’re willing to travel - or for that matter - for anyone willing to travel go see Dr. Martha Denckla at Kennedy Krieger Institute ( Part of Hopkins ).
410-502-9399
She is the best - people from all over the world see her.
She will tell you if your child is ADD, LD, etc. after doing an incredibly detailed interview with the parents and testing with your child.
Then she will give you tons of recommendations for accomodations for your child.
You can do a google search if you don’t believe me :)
The first and biggest question is whetehr he has those symptoms all the time, or only when you’re trying to teach him (and even then, it could be his learning as much as your teaching!) ONe of the trickiest aspects of an ADD diagnosis is that a few dozen other things can look just like it. If I’m frustrated or tired or missing a nutrient or low on exercise or you’ve just fumigated, I’m gonig to have all the symptoms — but methylphenidate (Ritalin) or behavior management won’t address those problems.
However, if he’s *always* got the symptoms, it’s worth checking further… is he impulsive?
